How Should Market Research Best React To Social Influence?
Tuesday, February 19, 2013, 8:35 am 12 CommentsWe increasingly need to look at the behavioral evidence of the same person for a methodological reality check; how long will it be before sampling methods allow us to easily match behavioral data with attitudinal data? Continue reading
Transparency is dead. Long live transparency!
Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 14:07 pm No CommentsIf you believe that technology companies will become major participants in the research economy, then you must also believe that transparency in how these companies do things will be much less than you are accustomed to. Continue reading
Revisting 8 Things I Would Do if I Were a Market Research Company
Monday, July 30, 2012, 12:44 pm 8 CommentsI won’t be shy about this: I left MRMW feeling rather vindicated. Two days of excellent speakers, one by one, reinforced each of the points I made previously in my 8 Things I Would Do if I Were a Market Research Company post. Here is what I heard and what I think it means today. Continue reading
Innovating The Innovation Conference
Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 22:09 pm 1 CommentI believe that our industry needs an independent, flexible, non-political and not purely financially driven channel to explore cutting edge innovation. I see these efforts as aligned with the goals and strategic objectives of other organizations and trade associations, often even collaborative with them, but we are still free to chart our own course and see what happens. Friday, December 2, 2011, 4:00 am 2 CommentsDespite reaching critical milestones such as global ubiquity of mobile coverage, 30% global penetration of smartphones (over 60% in the U.S.), overtaking the PC in shipments, and this week reaching the milestone of 1,000,000 apps available in the marketplace some naysayers hold on to the idea that the mobile revolution is an isolated event, not an evolutionary leap. In this post I’m going to try to put the arguments to rest and prove that 2011 was the tipping point. Continue reading
The Power of Play
Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 7:52 am 5 CommentsThere is a lot of talk about “gamification” at the moment in Market Research circles. As well as the proponents there are quite a few detractors. They seem to see research as a “serious” subject not to be trivialized or polluted by “gamificiation”. The problem is that they fail to understand the power of games. They also fail to understand how fundamental games are to human thought. Far from being trivial, games are a fundamental necessity for us in our cognitive development. Continue reading

Following up on the Great Mobile Research Debate
Friday, July 8, 2011, 18:08 pm 2 CommentsYesterday was a fun day! The debate we pulled together happened very much on the fly and it was an interesting experiment to see if we could translate the buzz around a social media conversation, tie that into an upcoming conference, and turn all of that into momentum for a virtual event. It worked better than I had hoped, and not only did we have fun, but I think we advanced the conversation around mobile research quite a bit and laid a great foundation for the dialogue we’ll have at the Market Research in the Mobile World conference on July 19-20.
